Tonex cabinet buzz on low B string

Post by Larry Dering »

I have the Tonex cabinet since December 2025. Lately the cabinet or speaker creates a horrible buzz on the low B string. Dialing down the bass on the cabinet helps some but not completely. Anyone else have this on E9 or even C6 low notes? My return date has expired but manufacturers warranty is 2 years. I haven't contacted IK Multimedia to discuss the issue.

Does it buzz in different venues or rooms in the house? I've had this issue a few times and found that it wasn't the cabinet. It was something else close by that was buzzing. Otherwise, it could be a loose screw or glue joint. Maybe the speaker cover? At worse, the speaker coil? I've never owned a Tonex, so I'm not familiar with how it's built. Maybe set the speaker next to you while picking the low strings and feel around inside and out and press your hand against the cabinet in different areas.

I pulled the grill and tightened all speaker mounted screws and all cabinet screws. Its sitting arms reach from me and I can press around on cabinet and speaker cone. I'm almost convinced it's inside the cabinet. Happens at around 160 Hz and cutting that frequency nearly off will stop the vibration. I may pull the speaker and look for something loose in the inner cabinet or power amp. Gotta be careful not to void the warranty.

As long as the speaker is out, maybe install a different speaker, if you have one, and eliminate the possibility of the speaker. If the cabinet is made of plywood, there could be a void in the plywood that is vibrating. Sounds like you're heading in the right direction. It's a wild chase sometimes.

Dennis, no I haven't removed the speaker yet. I can say that it's involved with the Tonex cabinet because I plugged the pedal into the return of another amp I don't get the buzz. I want to contact Tonex first so I don't void the warranty by pulling the speaker.

Today I used a frequency generator app on my phone and put a low 80HZ signal through the input. The cabinet itself is buzzing at the back area. I had already tightened the screws so I loosened them and slowly secured them. For now it's gone but I may need to remove the back and stiffen or brace the back. It's that or send it back for warranty coverage.

I had a speaker cabinet that had a buzz, turned out a small washer had dropped between the cabinet and the insulation. It was so loud I could hear it over the music. It was hard to find and drove me crazy.

I used to apply 3/8 peel and stick weather stripping around the back panels before screwing them down to eliminate the risk of vibration.

Where did you buy it? Warranty?

I bought mine from Sweetwater 2year warranty.

I’m loving the cab.

Got mine from ZZOUNDS. A mail order company I have done a lot of business with. At the time I ordered they were 599 when Sweetwater was still 699. Otherwise I would have went with Sweetwater. I know they are good about customer service and I have done business with them too.
